Crack repair
Most cracks in a Huntsville slab or block wall are shrinkage, not failure. The job is telling the two apart before you spend money.
Foundation Crack Repair in HuntsvillePiers & underpinning
When a corner of the house is sinking, piers carry the load past the soft clay to something firmer. In North Alabama that something is often limestone.
Foundation Piers & Underpinning in HuntsvilleCrawl space
Huntsville summers put warm, wet air into vented crawl spaces, and red clay holds water against the footings. Most crawl space problems start there.
Crawl Space Repair & Encapsulation in HuntsvilleWaterproofing
NRCS notes more than 49 inches of annual rain where its Decatur clay series was defined, and that clay sheds water slowly. Water that cannot drain away ends up pushing on your walls.
Basement & Foundation Waterproofing in HuntsvilleWhy Huntsville foundations move: red clay over limestone
Drive any construction site in the Tennessee Valley and you see it: red clay. The NRCS description of the Decatur soil series, common in this valley, shows firm, sticky, plastic clay from roughly 20 inches to 10 feet deep, formed from weathered limestone. It swells when wet and shrinks in dry spells, and footings ride along.
Under the clay is rock that dissolves. The Geological Survey of Alabama describes Madison County's shallow geology as Fort Payne Chert and Tuscumbia Limestone with karst features, and Big Spring downtown is the most visible example of water moving through that rock. Sinkholes are less common than clay movement, but they are the reason a good contractor asks about yard depressions before quoting piers.

The "December Giant" sinkhole in Shelby County, Alabama, 1972 (USGS). An extreme case, but the same limestone dissolution process operates across north Alabama.
